Government

Frisland:

The chief executive in Frisland is the Consul-General, who is elected for a life term. The CG is the supreme commander of the armed forces, presides over every session of the Senate, and is responsible for overseeing the 600,000 civil servants in Frisland and its territories. The current CG is Valers Zimichi, a former general and senator.
Real power lies in the hands of the Tribune of the People, who is elected for a 15 year term. The Tribune can veto any of the actions of his fellow officials or any legislation in the Senate. The current Tribune is Antonio Zeno.
Foreign affairs and the defence of the realm are taken care of by the Praetor Peregrinus. He is appointed by the Consul-General, and is in operational control or the armed forces. He also is repsonsible for internal security and counter-espionage, and he represents Frisland in dealings with foreign nations. The current PP is Niccolo Zeno, brother of the Tribune.
Justice is the purview of the Quaestor. The Quae is appointed by the Consul-General for life. He can overturn the ruling of any court, and he is the last level of legal appeal. The current quaestor is Claudis Sullust, a very distinguished jurist.
The Senate of Frisland is composed of 10 delegates from each of the 17 factiones,  plus delegates from Antilla and Hy-Brazil, for a grand total of 182 senators. The Senate intiates and approves legislation, and controls the budget. The President of the Senate is Marc Aurels.

Antilla:

The King of Antilla is the head of state, and represents Antilla outside of the kingdom. He also appoints (and can remove) both the Grand Vizier and the Mayor of the Palace. The kingship is hereditary, and the current king, Theodorus II, is a direct descendant of Justinian I.
The Grand Vizier is the true head of government, as he controls the finances and the civil service. He also appoints all of the King's Ministers besides the Mayor of the Palace. The current GV is Leo Basileus.
The Mayor of the Palace is responsible for internal security, and is commander-in-chief of the Antillan armed forces. The current Mayor is Dimitri Menthos.
The Governor-General of Antilla is appointed by the Frislandic Senate, and is the commander of all Frislandic forces in Antilla. He is also obligated to carry out all directives approved by the Senate. The current GGA is Tibers Clodio

Hy-Brazil:

The Grandmaster of the Order of San Marcos is the chief authority in Hy-Brazil. He is appointed for life by the Equestrian Assembly, and has complete power over the entire island. The current GM is Lucius Servius Scaevola.
The EA is a congregation of all the Commandantes, Chevaliers, and Domines of the Order of San Marcos. The EA meets whenever the GM dies to determine his successor. This decision must carry by a 3/4 majority.
The Governor-General of Hy-Brazil has exactly the same job description as his Antillan counterpart. the current GGHB is Publi Tullio.

A Brief History of Frisland

In the year 257 BE, Julius Mucius Scipio, one of the most famous generals in Valanian history, defeated the native chieftains of Frisland in a stunning campaign, and thus brought Frisland for the first time into the civilized world. Over the next 300 years, Frisland served as one of the remote outposts of the Empire, beating back Aleran invasions and generally serving as the northern bulwark of the empire. The peoples of Frisland strove their utmost to obtain Valanian citizenship by serving in Valania's armies all over Dorania.

When the Valanian Empire collapsed, thousands of Valanians fled to Frisland to escape the Vendan hordes laying waste to Valans and the other great Imperial cities. With the help of these new arrivals, Frisland was able to hold off the barbarians that threatened the land. However, the other nations around Frisland did not fare as well. Frisland became an island of civilization in a sea of barbarism.

When the Fixatians destroyed the Western Valanian Empire in the year 713 AE, several of the Thesian generals fled from their homeland, and established a "New Valans" in Antilla. These generals and their descendants ruled the island as "Emperors of Valania" until 857 AE, when the people of Antilla rose up against these usurpers and proclaimed one of their leaders as Justinian I, King of Antilla. In 1236 AE, Frisland invaded Antilla, and quickly quelched all opposition. The Frislanders wisely let the Antillans manage domestic policy, while retaining power over foreign affairs and defence.

The region known as Hy-Brazil was inhabited by descendants of the original Frislanders and divided into several petty chiefdoms until 515 AE. In that year, a group of paladins known as the Order of San Marcos settled the province as a base for their war against the Fixatian infidels. The Order ruled the region until 1398, when the Frislanders subjugated Hy-Brazil. They followed the same procedure as they did on Antilla - a Frislander Governor-General handled all foreign affairs and defence matters while the Order handled the rest.

By 1450 AE, Frisland was in crisis. Under Semproni Verres' infamous 6-Year Plans, the Frislandic economy had been focused on development of heavy industry - steel and concrete. But this fixation on massive amounts of pig iron and automobiles led to a neglect of more modern technologies. Frisland began to fall behind its neighbors in all important areas. It became painfully obvious that Frisland would have to end its long isolation and resume contact with the outside world.

Military

Frislandic Army doctrine stresses massed formations of tanks and infantry. Most of the Frislandic Army is either on garrison duty in Antilla and Hy-Brazil or is in the fortresses on the Limeadestani border. The air force is a branch of the army, and most of Frisland's planes are obselete. The Army totals roughly 800,000 men.

The Frislandic Navy is also somewhat outdated, but still remains a source of justifiable pride for the Senate and People of Frisland. The Navy focuses on massive battleships and heavy cruisers at the expense of submarines and air power. The submarines in the Frislandic Navy are predominantly diesel, though a few nuclear prototypes have been developed. The Frislandic Navy employs over 300,000 men

Frislandia does have nuclear weapons. Abundant uranium resources have allowed the praetors to undertake a great deal of nuclear testing. Although the Lexe Roscio prohibits the government form performing tests in the atmosphere, Frisland is conveniently possessed of several large underground caverns.

Culture and Religion

Because of its unique background, Frislanders are very contemptous of outsiders. As the only civilized nation surrounded by barbarians, Frisland developed a disdain for all things foreign. This is why Frisland has not had much in the way of relations with other nations untill now. This contempt extends even to Antillans and Brazilians - which has caused a good deal of consternation over the years.

Frislanders practice the Mos Maiorum, which is a derivation of the ancient pagan religion of Valania. The Frislanders honor Iovus as their chief god, with a special place reserved for Aris and Psidon as gods of war and the sea respectively. The Frislandic calendar is dotted with feasts, holidays, and public festivals in honor of various gods. This pre-Cruistian religion has not helped to further relations with either Antilla or Hy-Brazil, both of which are Cruistian.
